Post subject:  new game: Find the Missing Map Files

I have a number of maps on my server, and I know they exist on the clan server as well that have one thing in common: missing textures, sounds, and all sorts of other map related files.

I have made it a point to start finding the missing files for the maps on my server as I'm sick of it.

Anytime someone comes across a map that fails to download some files, I would like to be able to try to find the missing files. The missing files will be easier to find by using the map's filename and its title. The following is an example from my server:

"country.bsp -- Picnic in the country place - by Genie"

I was able to find the missing files and updated my server. But I have several other maps with this problem, and even Loxo's current map rotation has missing files. I keep notes on the maps that I find and check off the ones that i get the files for.

Does the map that I've listed exist on loxo? if so, I have the missing files if they need to be filled in.

The map didn't exist on Loxophilia. I have it here on my machine but I don't know what env/sound/wall files are associated with it. This is one of the problems of map maintenance that always bothered me. You have to do a hell of a lot of work to get them all into one package for distribution which is one of the reasons I always respected the work Deacon and Rosco and others were always willing to put into it. I would love a tool that would scan the BSP and gather up the associated files. One of these days...

If you have the wals and whatnot you can now vote the map on Loxo and download it. (1.3MB)

I also uploaded the sandslide3 map.

OK, my brains must be coming back to me after all the October excitement. I decided to take a look at the map problem and R1ch's entdump program proved to be a useful base to make some changes. Here's a link to my version of entdump, this one outputs the paths to the texture files the map is calling up, then it does the usual entity dump of the other objects. It repeats duplicate textures but we can probably refine that later, this is a good first cut though.

http://www.windowmeister.com/lox/entdump.c (source code)

A command line tool.
Usage:
entdump mapname.bsp > mapname.txt
Outputs to a file for editing with a text editor.

To print to screen for a quick survey, just pipe it through more:
entdump mapname.bsp | more

Greaper, check out the links to that entdump program, I finished it and it dumps the texture list using one entry per unique texture instead of all occurances of them. Source compiles clean on Windows, Linux and OS X.

Yes, it doesn't analyze the other components, just entities and textures. Download the newer version, it will shorten that textures list.

Maybe you have more than one copy of it along your path? I can't remember if I posted before or after uploading. If you hit the server soon after I posted there might have been an overlap. I expected to see no duplicate textures listed and some text indicating the number of textures between the texture list and the entity list. I probably should have put a version number on it. :) The .exe and source on the web match the updated version here so hit it again and test, it should post instructions when given no arguments and it should list the number of unique textures just after the texture list. It should list each texture only once.

Sometimes there were textures that were no longer available anywhere that I could download them, so what I would do in that situation would be to rename an appropiate texture ( rock or wall etc) that would work in its place.
I have not seen any maps that were missing textures when I was organizing them, so if you find any maps on the server that are missing textures please post the map name and I will see if I do have the missing files and upload them as needed

I'm all for fixing the map collection where it's broken. I hope the new entdump tool helps. The biggest problem where custom features is the case-sensitive nature of Linux file system. You might have the file on Linux but if the case of the file doesn't exactly match the one called for in the map the server can't find it. Many maps use upper-case names and it never makes a difference on Windows but if the file is on Linux, then the server can't find it to download it to the clients that don't have it. The original programmers of the mapping tools and the server code never took this into account.

When reporting to Rosco, it helps to know the map name, the texture name and if possible the entdump results. In the case of sounds (.wav files) and other custom map entities they will be listed in the entity list.

Before I came over to WOS I had an extensive collection of maps, not as many as WOS, but I had a few that WOS did not have, and I had a lot WOS did have but downloaded from the original authors. I may have some of the missing files on my server so let me know if you cannot find the file and I’ll search my server.
